Last week we “celebrated” a FRIDAY THE 13TH…and for some that is kind of scary. For others, it may mean something lucky.

I began to wonder about just how superstitious the people in the racing industry REALLY are. Personally, I always thought of myself as not particularly superstitious but when I was discussing the matter at home last night, I was reminded how, when my kids were younger and playing ball, I would always ‘close my eyes’ when they were at bat, thinking if I didn’t look, they would do better. Oddly enough…it seemed to work more often than not. Coincidence or faith…one will never know.

Being fairly new to the racing industry, I’ve been told of a surprising number of racing superstitions. That brought me to do a little research. Here’s some little tidbits that I found:

The Color Green: Historically, green cars have been a worry for many drivers. Before the days of widespread sponsorship, some even refused to race a green car.

Peanut Shells: Many NASCAR drivers have had an aversion to peanuts in their shells, banning them from the garage or pitlane. Shelled peanuts are, however, acceptable. This, according to legend, goes back to pre-war days when peanuts shells were found in the wrecks of cars involved in serious accidents.

$50.00 Dollar Bills: The closest thing to a legend about this one is that two-time NASCAR champion Joe Weatherly was given two $50 bills by a friend just before the beginning of a race at Riverside, Calif., in 1964. Weatherly died in a crash that day, and the $50 bills supposedly were found in the shirt pocket of his driver’s uniform.

Shaving on Race Day: All right, this one might have more to do with laziness than anything else. But there is a bit of history behind the superstition, and it once again involves a fatal accident. George “Doc” Mackenzie was a Depression-era racer who sported what even he referred to as his “lucky” goatee. But for some unknown reason he decided to shave it off the morning of a race in Milwaukee in 1936. He then died in an accident that day.

The Number 13: We won’t even go there…this one is so big that it’s just plain scary.

Am I superstitious? I guess so…yes I have good luck charms and let’s just say I won’t be walking under any ladders either.

LET’S HEAR FROM YOU! Are you superstitious and if so, what do you observe?
